The NEO project plans to give much importance to green spaces. In fact it is planned that Heysel will have twice as many park areas as it does today. Heysel aims to become a multifunctional living area where everyone can claim their public space.
The first visible realisation of this mission will take place in 2017 when Verregat Park will be significantly enlarged.
Verregat Park, situated behind Brussels Expo between Avenue des Magnolias and Rue des Genèvriers, is a green area used mainly by local residents. It includes a children’s playground.
In the NEO project, the park will be enlarged by almost 9,000 m². It will stretch to Avenue Empress Charlotte, flanking Hall 1 of Brussels Expo, thereby becoming more accessible, with a new entrance from the south.
The size of the park will also allow the development of new biodiversity.
This extension is made possible by the City of Brussels’ acquisition of the ground occupied by the Alliance Hotel, situated on Avenue Empress Charlotte, which will be demolished. Moreover the NEO project includes plans for the construction of a large hotel adjoining the future convention centre.
In addition, Brussels Expo plans to build a new road connecting Chaussée Romaine and Avenue Empress Charlotte, alongside this new green area. It will help to divert much of the commercial traffic away from Chaussée Romaine.
